Structural Design of Buildings for Extreme Loading

This short course is ideal for those who work in, or study, building design, including structural designers, civil engineers, students, mid-career professionals, plant and production managers, concreters, technicians and field inspectors.

There are no eligibility requirements.

This short course is taught by experts from the Faculty of Engineering and Technology and industry. You'll gain both theoretical knowledge and cutting edge skills applicable to the structural design of buildings. This industry-aligned course also includes a valuable practical component focused on the advanced analysis of structural loads that can impact buildings and other structures.

Learning is mapped to Australian Standards and other regulatory requirements.  It is suitable for overseas-trained professionals who are seeking a strong understanding of the Australian engineering sector.

• Advanced structural analysis: Use commercial software to perform structural analysis of a whole building and verify results using independent calculation methods
• Design for wind action: Explore structural parameters and determine wind-loads on a building as per AS1170.2.
• Design for seismic action: Design response spectra to determine earthquake loads on a building as per AS1170.4. Explore earthquake resistant design of RC walls and building structures as per AS3600.
• Design for impact and blast action: Examine impact and blast scenarios, model the detabilizing effects of impact actions on a structure
• Design for fire: Explore types of fire, fire curves, and the performance of building materials in a fire, alongside simulation of real fire behaviour
• Design workshop: Use state of the art techniques to design buildings that can withstand extreme events.

By the end of this course, you'll have a deeper understanding of how to perform structural analysis and structural design of buildings to withstand extreme events in alignment with the requirements of design provisions.

You'll be able to:

• Perform structural analysis of buildings, using industry-recognised software
• Confidently analyse your findings and apply structural principles to verify your results
• Design building structures that can withstand extreme events.

You will be taught by experts from the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology and industry.

This course runs over six weeks, with one two-hour session per week. This amounts to 12 hours of learning.
