Student experience
Overview
There’s more to university than just going to class and studying for exams. Make the most of your time on campus by taking advantage of all that the University of Melbourne has to offer.
Live where you study
College life makes it easy to make friends, and university will be just a short walk away. During your first year, you’ll have the option to live at one of the University of Melbourne’s residential colleges and benefit from extra support and opportunities offered as part of this experience.

Form life-long connections
In the Bachelor of Science (Extended), you’ll find yourself part of a small and supportive group of students. Small first-year class sizes, plus field trips and other activities all mean that you’ll have plenty of chance to form strong connections with your classmates.
I really enjoyed the support I got during my first year, and I always knew exactly who to go to. Take advantage of all the opportunities given – because you will be given a lot – and really push outside your comfort zone. I found most of my friendships and the best experiences have been when I’ve pushed myself.”
Jemma – Bachelor of Science (Extended) student
Support and mentoring
In addition to the targeted support offered as part of the Bachelor of Science (Extended) program, you’ll have access to all our standard academic skills support programs. Join our Peer Mentoring Program to be mentored by a more experienced Bachelor of Science student.
The team at Murrup Barak, the university’s Institute for Indigenous Development, are always available to provide you with support, opportunities to connect with other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, and dedicated tutoring to help with coursework and exam preparation.
Join our Peer Mentoring Program to be mentored by a more experienced Bachelor of Science student.
Student clubs and societies
Get involved! The University has over 200 clubs and societies, so find those that fit your interests and join up!
In particular, look up the Science Students’ Society, which runs events and activities throughout the year, including free fortnightly barbecues.

Study overseas
We encourage all our students to take part of their degree overseas. You can immerse yourself in a different social, cultural and intellectual scene, adding an international perspective to your studies.

Career connections
There are many opportunities to network and build connections while you’re at university, and it’s never too early to start thinking about your career.
Events that connect students with employers are held throughout the year. You’ll have the opportunity to meet and learn from professionals in your field.
We also offer students the STEM Industry Mentoring Program – helping develop your communication skills and employability.
Internships
Internships are short-term work experience placements, where you can use what you’ve learned in your course in the real world.
We’ll help you find internships to enhance your employability, and you can even take internships subjects for course credit.
Volunteering
While you’re studying with us, why not take advantage of the many opportunities available for you to get involved with volunteering. It’s a great chance to extend your learning opportunities, connect with communities, and build your CV.
You might find yourself mentoring high-school students in the Residential Indigenous Science Experience, inspiring prospective students as a Science Student Ambassador, or presenting a science show in Science Delivery.
