Course overview

Overview

From January 2025, the Bachelor of Science (Extended) has been re-designed as a 3.5 year course, with the first undergraduate exit diploma at the University of Melbourne. Currently these changes do not apply to current or past Bachelor of Science (Extended) students.

The Bachelor of Science (Extended) is a degree exclusively for talented Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who are interested in science but have not had the opportunity to meet the Bachelor of Science entry requirements.

Look at the world around you. Do you see something that could be better? Maybe it’s the glass on your phone, or an incurable disease, a lack of renewable energy options, ecosystems in trouble, or the missing ‘theory of everything’. It’s only when you understand something that you can hope to improve it, and science gives you the tools to do just that.

In the next decade, an estimated 75 per cent of jobs in the fastest-growing industries will need skills in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine. Bring your passion, get ready to learn from our internationally renowned lecturers, and join us to tackle the world’s greatest challenges.

You’ll have access to the full range of subject choices and opportunities within the Bachelor of Science, plus built-in support and academic skills development to ensure your success.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who receive an ATAR score of more than 50 are encouraged to apply.

Tailor your degree

The Bachelor of Science is about choice – and in the Bachelor of Science (Extended), we’ll support you no matter which path you choose.

You’ll focus on a science discipline of your choice in Year 1, with guidance from a discipline mentor to help you build your confidence. You’ll also meet the prerequisites for the Bachelor of Science, so you’ll be able to select from the full range of over 40 majors in Year 2 – from agricultural science to zoology and everything in between.

If you already know what you want to study, you can start shaping your career right away. If you’re not sure and have interests in many areas, you can leave your options open for longer while you explore. Either way, you’ll have access to tailored support throughout your degree, academic and peer mentoring to help you reach your goals, and industry exposure to get you to your next step in science.

If you choose not to continue with a Bachelor of Science after completing Year 1, you may be able to pathway into another undergraduate degree at Melbourne. Or you can graduate with the Diploma in Science, allowing you to transition into employment armed with career skills developed at Melbourne.

Support

We know that starting at university can be equal parts exciting and overwhelming. As a Bachelor of Science (Extended) student, you’ll feel comfortable and confident with tailored support from the Faculty of Science and Murrup Barak.

Financial assistance

You may access financial assistance through our Naarm Scholarship program, in which Bachelor of Science (Extended) students receive an extended living and accommodation allowance.
