Major structure
Overview
The majority of Arts Majors require 100 points of study for attainment. This means out of the 300 point program, you have the opportunity to achieve two Majors in your course. Along with this, the Faculty of Arts offers a variety of Breadth Subjects designed to enhance your learning with options from a variety of fields.
Note: Students completing a Major or Minor in Russian Studies will need to complete a certain distribution of Compulsory and Elective subjects based on their Entry Point. For more information on required subjects, view the Handbook entry for this course.
Sasha Greenaway
Sasha Greenaway is currently studying a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Russian Studies.
The University of Melbourne is one of the only universities in Australia to offer Russian, and through my language studies I have had the opportunity to undertake cultural subjects as well. I was fascinated to learn about the foundation of Russian cities and the lives of the Tsars through my Russian classes. Through these classes I have developed an interest in politics, foreign film and literature.
I went on exchange to Lomonosov Moscow State University for one semester. All of my classes were taught entirely in Russian and it was an incredible experience. I had never visited Russia before and had no idea what to expect. I fell in love with Moscow while I was there, and I feel that I have a much greater appreciation for Russian society and culture. I have also been involved with the Melbourne International Relations Society and attended many Model United Nations conferences with this group. These conferences are a great way to meet other students outside a classroom environment and get to know people studying in other disciplines.
I am planning on undertaking the Juris Doctor program next year. I am particularly interested in international law and I hope to combine law and languages into my career in the future. Knowledge of languages is always helpful when applying for international opportunities.
