Yasmin Jarkan
Yasmin Jarkan is currently studying a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Politics and International Studies
I was accepted into the Parliamentary Internship subject which required me to work closely with a Member of Parliament to create a research report that would be permanently kept in the Parliamentary Library. Part of my role as a parliamentary intern involved producing a research report. I was lucky enough to be given a topic that I am extremely passionate about: engaging young people with national parks.
I loved every moment of this internship and feel so lucky to have been afforded such a unique opportunity to learn about Victoria’s parliamentary system and how public policy is created.
Through my Politics and International Studies major, and Arts degree in general, I have learnt to be flexible in my opinions and feel comfortable that they will change as I continue to learn and grow. This occurred in my first year when Peter Singer made an excellent case for veganism, my second year when I learnt more about intersectional feminism, and this year when I discovered the complexities of public policy creation and implementation.
During my study, I have contributed to the student paper Farrago, joined clubs, and have been employed by the University of Melbourne as a PASS tutor for the subject The Politics of Sex, which I completed last year.
