Application Closing Date: 18 October 2024
Students who wish to apply for the Psychology Honours Program as their Fourth Year/Honours Stream, please note the application deadline may vary with other Honours streams. Further information for application requirements and the selection timeline can be found directly with Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences.
MDHS Honours Application Process
We recommend starting the application process well before the deadline, as finding a project and supervisor can take several weeks.
Step 1: Submit An Online Application
- If you are a current or former University of Melbourne student or applicant, apply online using your University of Melbourne credentials.
- If you are a new applicant, select "Apply as a new student."
- To find your desired course, enter one of the following in the search:
- BH-BMED – Bachelor of Biomedicine (Degree with Honours)
- BH-SCI – Bachelor of Science (Degree with Honours)
- Select MDHS Specialisations as the discipline of study in the online application form.
- Please provide the following information:
- Copies of official transcript(s) for your undergraduate degree
- Any advanced standing or credit transfers from:
- Previous tertiary study
- Exchange programs
- Study abroad programs
- Please also include an explanation of the grading system(s) used.
Step 2: Login to Sonia to view upcoming projects
Sonia is the Honours Project database. You can login to view a list of available projects for upcoming intake by using the using the prospective student login found in the Honours Application Guide.
Once deemed eligible for your preferred course, you will receive an email with your personal login to access Sonia. You will need these details to complete Step 5.
Step 3: Begin contacting potential project supervisors
After reviewing the available projects, contact potential supervisors about opportunities that interest you. We recommend starting early, as this process can take several weeks.
You can find helpful tips for contacting supervisors in our Honours Application Guide.
Step 4: Reach an agreement with a project supervisor
After meeting with a supervisor, you need to secure at least a verbal agreement from them stating that they are willing to take you on for their project. But we recommend that you obtain this in writing where possible.
Important: An agreement from a project supervisor does not guarantee that you will receive an offer of study or be allocated to that project.
Step 5: List your preferred projects in Sonia
This part of the process is often referred to as "Preferencing". Please ensure that you complete this step by the deadline displayed on the Sonia homepage. You can only do this once you have received a personal login.
To list your preferred projects:
- Sign in to your Sonia account with your personal login.
- Select and rank your projects (the ones which you have a supervisor agreement for) in order of preference.
You can preference up to four projects in Round One, and up to three projects in Round Two. It is recommended that you preference multiple projects.
Step 6: Project Allocation Process
Once the preferencing deadline closes, the MDHS Honours Team works with project supervisors to match students with their projects. This allocation process determines which project each student will undertake.
Please note that each project has limited spots available and multiple students may preference the same project. This means that you may be allocated to your second or third project choice or may not be allocated to a project.
Step 7: Notification of Outcome
We will notify you of the outcome of your application via email.
If you are not allocated a project in Round One and places are still available on the course, you will automatically receive an invitation to Round Two. For Round Two, you'll need to repeat steps 3, 4, and 5.
If you are not allocated to a project in Round Two, your application will not proceed. However, we welcome your application for a future intake.
Important: There is only one round for mid-year intake. Your application will not proceed if you are not allocated in round one in the mid-year intake. However, we welcome your application for a future intake.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Honours in BioSciences, Human Nutrition or Veterinary Bioscience
